PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress Review Plushbeds Mattress

If you are trying to snag an eco-friendly mattress to your bedroom, you may want to take into account the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Built with organic latex, this bed aims to be as great for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Plushbeds Mattress

But just how well does it live up to this mission? That’s what I’m here to learn, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to find out its feel, how it sleeps and whether or not it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Read on below for my full review of this PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is built with three 3″ layers of natural Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which often has a light and airy texture, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, each of the three Dunlop sections is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best suits the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six different firmnesses for each mattress, using a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t be able to determine how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a series of graphics on its website detailing all of the various ways to orient the latex segments.

Additionally, if you are still not happy with the feel, PlushBeds is happy to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex for more support.

For the purpose of my review, I’ll be taking a look at the Botanical Bliss at the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Moderate layer in the center and the Firm section as the base.

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this plush latex mattress and see what is going on inside.

Cover:  Made with organic wool and cotton, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with some satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the next three sections are comprised of 100% organic Dunlop Latex.

This substance is compact and has a fast response to stress , creating a bed that’s incredibly bouncy. Compared to memory foam, latex does not feature much if any contouring, so you are unlikely to feel stuck at the mattress.

Another thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be a fantastic option for those who tend to sleep hot at night.

As far as the texture in this specific configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some initial deep sinkage to the mattress, which is buffered marginally by the Medium latex section as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base under.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ structure is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all its materials are licensed by the International Organic Latex Standard and the International Organic Textile Standard.

Plus, the bed can also be GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making sure that the mattress has fulfilled some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Plushbeds Mattress

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the construction of this Botanical Bliss, let us talk about the firmness and texture.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found I was immediately interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in further, I struck the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and out of the structure.

Since people of different sizes, shapes and weights will feel firmness otherwise, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We all took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a personal firmness rating and then compiled them on the chart below.

While feel is always going to be an individual thing, this will hopefully give you a good sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from one outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing on an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it seems as though this bed is pretty soft.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for some pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Keep in mind that we’re only looking at the bed in its”Medium” orientation and that shifting around the layers could make it firmer or softer.

For more specific, the Botanical Bliss Medium provides a firmness range from 5-7 using soft, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and only utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These different sections can be moved around to create 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed selection.

So if we swapped around the layers in our bed to have a firm coating up top, a moderate transition segment and a soft base, we’d wind up with a bed which had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions on the best way best to orient the layers in your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important part of texture is stress, or more specifically where pressure points might form while lying on top of a brand new bed.

Rather than merely describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d give you a visual representation rather. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

You can see the effects on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the soft layer of latex foam working to fill in the space in my thoracic region.

Even for this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it effortless for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I noticed some deep compression through the top layers.

While I didn’t feel as if I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had especially good edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers have a tendency to enjoy softer mattresses, I was not surprised to find that I felt a lot of great pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the graphic above, I did not notice any strain in my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for people who doze primarily on their sides.

Stomach:  And lastly, once I rolled on my stomach, I began to feel a little discomfort as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers have a tendency to prefer firm beds as they help to keep the spine in a pleasant, even line, so those who sleep solely on their stomachs might want to decide on a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissPlushbeds Mattress

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a spouse ? Well then, you’ll want to keep a tight eye trained on its motion move, or the amount of disturbance likely to be felt from 1 side of the bed to the other.

Essentially, this test will let you know just how bothered you will be by your bed partner’s movements in the night.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each fall is intended to symbolize a different movement you are likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to complete on jumping (12″).

For those who aren’t lovers of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most frequent complaints related to the substance and can be seen in other all-latex beds, like the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

If buying a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To illustrate this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 pound steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 pound medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the rebound of the latex helps to combat any sort of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an incredible amount of sinkage.

While not the same as contouring, which refers to the kind of cushiony pressure relief you might get in the shoulders and hips from a memory foam mattress like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft texture.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS BEST FOR YOU?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its biggest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favorite things about this mattress is how bouncy it is, which might be an attractive feature for those looking for buoyant support.

Another significant pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The all-natural latex is excellent at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t snore at night.

And finally, a huge selling point is the organic construction. From the organic wool in the cover to the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is totally green.

CONS

As we mentioned above, this mattress didn’t have amazing movement transfer results, meaning you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the night.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you are not going to experience a lot of contour here, one of the most frequent complaints about latex that could be a deal breaker for those of you needing deep pressure relief. Plushbeds Mattress

SUMMARY

plushbeds-mattress-summary

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress is a good mattress overall. With very superior comfort, support, bounce, and cooling, it is tough to look beyond this 100% latex mattress. An organic cotton cover improves airflow and rounds out a healthy outer covering. Additionally, there is a 1″ coating of 100 percent Joma wool beneath the cover which does an excellent job of enhancing breathablity of the mattress as well as absorbing moisture. This helps sleepers keep a cool body temperature during sleep. Overall, the PlushBeds mattress is a nice latex mattress that provides an quality level of support in all sleeping positions along with great cooling and a rounded hug / body contour.
