DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Firmness Chart

I’m super excited about today’s review because I’ll be having a look at a few of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper would benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view also. This gives you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent the this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it is definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Firmness Chart

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach.

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed whatsoever. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the very best foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Firmness Chart

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When purchasing a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a broad assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Firmness Chart

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the quantity of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
