If you are trying to snag an eco-friendly mattress for your bedroom, you might want to consider the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Built with organic latex, this mattress aims to be as great for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Plush Beds Assembly

But how well does it live up to this assignment? That’s what I am here to learn, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to find out its feel, how it sleeps and whether it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Continue reading below for my full review of the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is built with three 3″ layers of organic Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which frequently has a light and airy feel, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, each of the three Dunlop sections is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best suits the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six distinct firmnesses for every mattress, with a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t be able to determine how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a series of graphics on its site detailing all of the various ways to orient the latex segments.

Additionally, if you’re still not satisfied with the feel, PlushBeds is happy to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex to get more support.

For the purpose of my review, I’ll be looking at the Botanical Bliss in the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Medium layer in the middle and the Firm segment as the base.

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this plush latex mattress and see what’s going on inside.

Cover:  made out of organic wool and cotton, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with some satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the following three sections are comprised of 100% all-natural Dunlop Latex.

This substance is dense and has a fast response to pressure, creating a bed that’s incredibly bouncy. Compared to memory foam, latex does not feature much if any contouring, so you’re unlikely to feel stuck at the mattress.

One more thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be an excellent option for those who tend to sleep hot at night.

So far as the feel in this particular configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some first deep sinkage into the mattress, which is buffered slightly by the Moderate latex section as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base under.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ construction is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all of its materials have been licensed by the Global Organic Latex Standard and the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Additionally, the bed is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring that the mattress has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Plush Beds Assembly

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of this Botanical Bliss, let’s chat about the firmness and feel.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and discovered that I was instantly interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in further, I encountered the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and from the structure.

Since folks of different sizes, weights and shapes will feel firmness differently, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me determine just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We each took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a personal firmness rating and then compiled them on the chart below.

While feel is always likely to be an individual thing, this will hopefully give you a good sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from 1 outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness, it appears like this bed is pretty soft.

I personally gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for some pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Keep in mind that we’re only looking at the bed in its”Moderate” orientation and that shifting around the layers could make it either firmer or softer.

To get more specific, the Botanical Bliss Moderate provides a firmness range from 5-7 using gentle, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and only utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These different sections can be moved around to create 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed selection.

So if we swapped across the layers in our bed to have a firm coating up top, a medium transition segment and a soft foundation, we’d end up with a bed that had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions on the best way to orient the layers on your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important component of texture is pressure, or more specifically where pressure points might kind while lying on top of a brand new bed.

Rather than merely describing where these stress spots might crop up, I thought I’d give you a visual representation rather. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach.

You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the soft coating of latex foam working to fill in the space in my thoracic region.

Even for all this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it easy for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I noticed some deep compression through the top layers.

While I didn’t feel as if I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had particularly solid edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers tend to enjoy softer mattresses, I wasn’t surprised to find that I felt lots of fantastic pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the picture above, I didn’t notice any tension at my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for people who doze mostly on their own sides.

Stomach:  And lastly, once I rolled on my stomach, I started to feel a little discomfort as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm beds since they help to keep the spine in a pleasant, even line, so those who sleep solely on their stomachs may want to decide on a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissPlush Beds Assembly

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a partner? Well then, you’ll want to keep a tight eye trained on its motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the bed to the other.

Basically, this test will let you know just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s moves in the evening.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each fall is intended to symbolize another movement you are likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to complete on jumping (12″).

For those who aren’t fans of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most frequent complaints associated with the substance and can be viewed in other all-latex beds, such as the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To illustrate this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 pound medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the rebound of the latex certainly helps to combat any sort of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an extraordinary amount of sinkage.

While not the same as contouring, which refers to this kind of cushiony pressure relief you might get at the shoulders and buttocks from a memory foam bed like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft feel.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS BEST FOR YOU?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its greatest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favorite things about this mattress is the way bouncy it’s , which could be an attractive feature for those of you looking for buoyant support.

Another significant pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The all-natural latex is excellent at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t snore at night.

And finally, a big selling point is the organic building . From the organic wool in the cover to the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is wholly green.

CONS

As we mentioned above, this mattress didn’t have amazing motion transfer results, meaning you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the night.

Another factor to keep in mind is that you are not going to encounter a lot of contour here, among the most common complaints about latex that could be a deal breaker for those of you in need of deep pressure relief. Plush Beds Assembly

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress is a fantastic mattress overall. With very superior comfort, support, bounce, and cooling, it’s tough to look beyond this 100% latex mattress. An organic cotton cover enhances airflow and rounds out a healthy outer covering. Additionally, there’s a 1″ layer of 100 percent Joma wool beneath the cover which does an excellent job of improving breathablity of the mattress as well as absorbing moisture. This helps sleepers keep a cool body temperature during sleep. Overall, the PlushBeds mattress is a wonderful latex mattress that gives an quality level of support in all sleeping positions together with terrific cooling and a round hug / body shape.
