DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Depth

I’m super excited about today’s review since I’ll be taking a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different substances at play here, I am stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. When these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a solid foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a nice lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. As you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Depth

PRESSURE MAP

Instead of simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Depth

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Depth

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to use the entire surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you think about the quantity of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
