DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar

I am super excited about today’s review since I’ll be having a look at a few of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to stress, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This gives you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent the this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking out of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar

PRESSURE MAP

Rather than just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I still felt supported and the very best foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar

MOTION TRANSFER

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to learn what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a broad assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
