DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Ultimate Mattress Pad

I’m super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper would benefit from it most.

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. When these segments are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness otherwise. Rather than giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is clear the this mattress is really firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a solid bed. As you’ll feel some small sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Ultimate Mattress Pad

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and tummy.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover supplied quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Ultimate Mattress Pad

MOTION TRANSFER

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse , you will want to learn what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a broad range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Ultimate Mattress Pad

EDGE SUPPORT

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
