DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar 3

I’m super excited about today’s review since I’ll be taking a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the entire.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it is definitely a good bed. As you’ll feel some small sinking out of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar 3

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the effects on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt encouraged and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar 3

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress into another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.

When purchasing a new mattress, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Woodbriar 3

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial that you think about the quantity of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
