DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Finder

I am super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at one of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it most.

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the entire.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this time I’d like to remember that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view also. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. As you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Finder

PRESSURE MAP

Instead of just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed whatsoever. The quilted cover supplied quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I still felt supported and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Finder

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress into another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still look at the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Finder

EDGE SUPPORT

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the quantity of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
