DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Selector

I am super excited about today’s review because I’ll be having a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper could benefit from it most.
Read on below for my full review of the DreamCloud mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Selector

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the entire.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This gives you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent the this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Selector

PRESSURE MAP

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach. You can see the effects on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I still felt supported and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Selector

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still look at the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.

If purchasing a new mattress, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Selector

EDGE SUPPORT

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to meet the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle . Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
