DreamCloud Mattress Review Saatva Mattress Vs Dreamcloud

I am super excited about today’s review since I’ll be taking a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper could benefit from it .
Read on below for my full review of the DreamCloud mattress. Saatva Mattress Vs Dreamcloud

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these segments are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a solid foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from springs.

At this time I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent the this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. As you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Saatva Mattress Vs Dreamcloud

Instead of simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I felt encouraged and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Saatva Mattress Vs Dreamcloud

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you intend on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to learn what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress into another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I would still look at the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular. Saatva Mattress Vs Dreamcloud

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the quantity of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle . Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
