DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Topper Big Lots

I’m super excited about the current review since I’ll be having a look at a few of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it .
Read on below for my full review of the DreamCloud mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Topper Big Lots

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also react quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a solid foundation for the entire.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this time I’d like to remember that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view also. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent the this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Topper Big Lots

PRESSURE MAP

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Topper Big Lots

MOTION TRANSFER

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I would still look at the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Topper Big Lots

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
