DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Descriptions

I am super excited about today’s review since I’ll be taking a look at one of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it .
Read on below for my full review of this DreamCloud mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Descriptions

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the most important use of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the construction of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This gives you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the graph above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it is definitely a good bed. As you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Descriptions

Rather than simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud to you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt encouraged and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Descriptions

MOTION TRANSFER

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress into the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be pretty good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

If buying a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Descriptions

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to use the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the quantity of edge support it will provide.

I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle . Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
