If you are looking to snag an eco-friendly mattress for your bedroom, you might want to consider the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Built with organic latex, this mattress aims to be as good for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Who Owns Plush Beds

But just how well does it live up to this assignment? That’s what I’m here to learn, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to find out its feel, the way that it sleeps and whether it could be the mattress of your dreams.

Read on below for my full review of this PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is constructed with three 3″ layers of natural Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which frequently has a light and airy texture, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, each of the three Dunlop sections is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best suits the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six different firmnesses for every mattress, using a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t have the ability to figure out how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a series of graphics on its website detailing all of the various ways to orient the latex sections.

Plus, if you’re still not satisfied with the feel, PlushBeds is pleased to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex for more support.

For the purpose of my review, I’ll be looking at the Botanical Bliss in the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Medium layer in the center and the Firm segment as the foundation .

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this plush latex mattress and see what’s going on inside.

Cover:  Made with organic cotton and wool, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with a few satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the following few sections are comprised of 100% organic Dunlop Latex.

This substance is dense and has a fast response to stress , creating a bed that’s incredibly bouncy. Compared to memory foam, latex doesn’t feature much if any contouring, so you are not likely to feel stuck in the mattress.

One more thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be an excellent option for those of you who tend to sleep hot during the night.

As far as the texture in this specific configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some initial deep sinkage into the mattress, which is buffered slightly by the Medium latex segment as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base under.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ construction is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all its materials have been accredited by the Global Organic Latex Standard and the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Additionally, the bed can also be GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making sure that the mattress has fulfilled some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Who Owns Plush Beds

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this Botanical Bliss, let’s chat about the firmness and texture.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found I was immediately interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in farther, I encountered the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and from the structure.

Since folks of different sizes, shapes and weights are going to feel firmness otherwise, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We all took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a private firmness rating and then compiled them on the chart below.

While feel is always going to be a single thing, this will hopefully give you a great sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from 1 outlier, we were largely in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing on an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness, it appears as though this bed is really soft.

I personally gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for a few pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Keep in mind that we are only taking a look at the mattress in its”Medium” orientation and that shifting around the layers can make it either firmer or softer.

To get more specific, the Botanical Bliss Medium provides a firmness range from 5-7 using gentle, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and just utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These various sections can be moved around to make 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed range.

If we swapped across the layers in our bed to have a firm layer up top, a moderate transition segment and a soft foundation, we’d end up with a bed that had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions about how to orient the layers on your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important part of texture is stress, or more especially where pressure points might form while lying on top of a new bed.

Rather than merely describing where these stress spots might crop up, I thought I’d give you a visual representation instead. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

You can see the effects on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the bed, with the soft layer of latex foam working to fill in the space in my thoracic region.

Even for all this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it easy for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I noticed some profound compression through the top layers.

While I didn’t feel as though I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had particularly solid edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers tend to enjoy softer mattresses, I wasn’t surprised to discover that I felt a lot of great pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the graphic above, I did not notice any tension at my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for those who doze mostly on their sides.

Stomach:  And finally, after I rolled on my stomach, I began to feel a bit of distress as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm beds as they help keep the spine in a pleasant, even line, so those who sleep solely on their stomachs may want to opt for a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissWho Owns Plush Beds

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a partner? Well then, you’ll want to keep a tight eye trained on its own motion transfer, or the quantity of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the bed to the other.

Essentially, this test will inform you just how bothered you’ll be by your bed partner’s movements in the evening.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each fall is meant to symbolize another movement you’re likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

For those who aren’t lovers of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most common complaints associated with the material and can be seen in other all-latex beds, such as the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To exemplify this sinkage, I put four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the bounce of the latex certainly helps to combat any type of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an incredible amount of sinkage.

While not the same as contouring, which refers to this sort of cushiony pressure relief you might get at the shoulders and buttocks from a memory foam bed like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft feel.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Now that we have taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its greatest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favorite things about this mattress is the way bouncy it’s , which could be an attractive feature for those of you looking for buoyant support.

Another significant pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The organic latex is fantastic at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t overheat at night.

And lastly, a huge selling point is the organic construction. From the organic wool in the cover to the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is totally green.

CONS

As we mentioned above, this mattress did not have amazing motion transfer results, which means that you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the night.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you’re not going to encounter a good deal of shape here, among the most common complaints about latex that could be a deal breaker for those of you needing deep pressure relief. Who Owns Plush Beds
