If you are trying to snag an eco-friendly mattress to your bedroom, you may want to take into account the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Constructed with organic latex, this bed aims to be as great for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Plushbeds Natural Latex Toppers

But just how well does it live up to this assignment? That’s what I am here to find out, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to find out its feel, how it sleeps and whether it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Continue reading below for my full review of the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is built with three 3″ layers of natural Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which frequently has a light and airy texture, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, each of the three Dunlop segments is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best matches the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six distinct firmnesses for every mattress, with a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t have the ability to figure out how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a set of graphics on its site detailing all the various ways to orient the latex segments.

Plus, if you are still not satisfied with the feel, PlushBeds is happy to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex to get more support.

For the purpose of my review, I will be looking at the Botanical Bliss in the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Medium layer in the middle and the Firm section as the base.

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this lavish latex mattress and see what’s going on inside.

Cover:  made out of organic cotton and wool, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with some satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the next few sections are comprised of 100% organic Dunlop Latex.

This material is compact and has a quick response to stress , making a bed that is incredibly bouncy. In comparison to memory foam, latex does not feature much if any contouring, so you are unlikely to feel stuck in the mattress.

Another thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be a fantastic option for those of you who are inclined to sleep hot at night.

As far as the feel in this particular configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some first deep sinkage into the mattress, which is buffered marginally by the Moderate latex section as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base below.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ structure is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all of its materials are accredited by the International Organic Latex Standard and the International Organic Textile Standard.

Additionally, the bed can also be GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring that the mattress has fulfilled some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Plushbeds Natural Latex Toppers

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of the Botanical Bliss, let us talk about the firmness and feel.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and discovered that I was instantly interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in farther, I struck the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and from the structure.

Since people of different sizes, weights and shapes are going to feel firmness differently, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We all took a turn lying about the plush organic mattress, gave it a personal firmness rating and then compiled them on the chart below.

While feel is always likely to be a single thing, this will hopefully give you a good sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from one outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing on an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness, it seems like this bed is pretty soft.

I personally gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is very likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for a few pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Bear in mind that we’re only taking a look at the mattress in its”Medium” orientation and that shifting around the layers can make it either firmer or softer.

For more specific, the Botanical Bliss Medium provides a firmness range from 5-7 using soft, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and just utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These various sections can be moved around to create 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed selection.

If we swapped around the layers in our bed to have a firm layer up top, a moderate transition segment and a soft base, we’d wind up with a bed which had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions on how best to orient the layers in your individual Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important component of feel is stress, or more especially where pressure points might form while lying on top of a brand new bed.

Rather than merely describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d provide you a visual representation rather. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

You can see the effects on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the bed, with the soft coating of latex foam working to fill in the space at my lumbar region.

Even for this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it effortless for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I detected some profound compression through the top layers.

While I did not feel as though I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had especially good edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers tend to like softer mattresses, I wasn’t surprised to discover that I felt a lot of great pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the graphic above, I did not notice any strain in my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for those who doze mostly on their own sides.

Stomach:  And lastly, after I rolled on my stomach, I began to feel a bit of distress as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm beds as they help keep the spine in a nice, even line, so those who sleep solely on their stomachs might want to opt for a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissPlushbeds Natural Latex Toppers

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a partner? Well then, you’ll want to keep a tight eye trained on its motion move, or the quantity of disturbance likely to be felt from 1 side of the bed to another.

Basically, this test will let you know just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s moves in the evening.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each fall is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

For those who aren’t lovers of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most common complaints related to the substance and can be seen in other all-latex beds, such as the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To illustrate this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 pound steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 pound medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the rebound of the latex certainly helps to combat any sort of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an extraordinary amount of sinkage.

While not the same as contouring, which refers to the sort of cushiony pressure relief you may get at the shoulders and hips from a memory foam mattress like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft texture.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its greatest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favourite things about this mattress is the way bouncy it’s , which might be an attractive feature for those looking for buoyant support.

Another major pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The organic latex is fantastic at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t overheat at night.

And lastly, a huge selling point is the organic construction. From the organic wool in the cover to the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is wholly green.

CONS

As we discussed above, this mattress didn’t have amazing motion transfer results, which means that you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the night.

Another factor to keep in mind is that you’re not going to experience a lot of shape here, among the most common complaints about latex that might be a deal breaker for those of you needing deep pressure relief. Plushbeds Natural Latex Toppers

SUMMARY

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress is a fantastic mattress overall. With very good comfort, support, bounce, and cooling, it’s tough to look beyond this 100% latex mattress. An organic cotton cover improves airflow and rounds out a healthy outer covering. Additionally, there is a 1″ coating of 100% Joma wool beneath the cover which does a great job of enhancing breathablity of the mattress as well as absorbing moisture. This helps sleepers keep a cool body temperature during sleep. All in all, the PlushBeds mattress is a nice latex mattress that provides an quality level of support in all sleeping positions together with terrific cooling and a rounded hug / body shape.
