If you are trying to snag an eco-friendly mattress for your bedroom, you may want to consider the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Constructed with organic latex, this mattress aims to be as good for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Plushbeds Memory Foam Reviews

But how well does it live up to this assignment? That’s what I am here to learn, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to find out its feel, the way that it sleeps and whether it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Read on below for my full review of the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is built with three 3″ layers of organic Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which often has a light and airy feel, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, each of the three Dunlop segments is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best matches the sleeper.

In accordance with PlushBeds, there are a total of six different firmnesses for every mattress, with a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t have the ability to figure out how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a series of graphics on its site detailing all of the various ways to orient the latex segments.

Additionally, if you are still not satisfied with the feel, PlushBeds is happy to throw in an additional Firm layer of latex for more support.

For the purpose of my review, I will be looking at the Botanical Bliss at the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Moderate layer in the center and the Firm section as the base.

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this lavish latex mattress and see what is going on inside.

Cover:  Made with organic cotton and wool, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with some satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the following few sections are comprised of 100% all-natural Dunlop Latex.

This material is compact and has a fast response to pressure, creating a bed that’s incredibly bouncy. In comparison to memory foam, latex doesn’t feature much if any contouring, so you’re not likely to feel stuck in the mattress.

Another thing you’re most likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be a fantastic option for those of you who are inclined to sleep hot during the night.

So far as the feel in this specific configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some first deep sinkage to the mattress, which is buffered slightly by the Moderate latex segment as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base below.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ structure is also noteworthy because it is a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all its materials have been licensed by the Global Organic Latex Standard and the International Organic Textile Standard.

Additionally, the mattress can also be GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making sure that the mattress has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Plushbeds Memory Foam Reviews

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this Botanical Bliss, let us talk about the firmness and texture.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found that I was immediately interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in further, I encountered the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and out of the structure.

Since folks of different sizes, weights and shapes are going to feel firmness otherwise, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We each took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a private firmness score and then compiled them on the graph below.

While feel is always going to be an individual thing, this will hopefully give you a good sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from 1 outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing an average rating of 5.4.

In comparison to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it appears as though this bed is really soft.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is very likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for a few pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Keep in mind that we are only looking at the mattress in its”Medium” orientation and that changing around the layers could make it either firmer or softer.

For more specific, the Botanical Bliss Moderate provides a firmness range from 5-7 using gentle, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and only uses medium, firm and extra firm latex. These various sections can be moved around to make 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed selection.

So if we swapped across the layers in our bed to have a firm layer up top, a medium transition segment and a soft foundation, we’d wind up with a bed that had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions about how best to orient the layers on your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important component of texture is pressure, or more especially where pressure points might kind while lying on top of a new bed.

Instead of merely describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d give you a visual representation rather. To do this, I put a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach.

You can see the results on the image below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the soft coating of latex foam working to fill in the space in my thoracic region.

Even for this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it effortless for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I noticed some profound compression through the top layers.

While I didn’t feel as though I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had especially good edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers tend to enjoy softer mattresses, I wasn’t surprised to find that I felt lots of fantastic pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the graphic above, I didn’t notice any tension at my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for those who doze mostly on their sides.

Stomach:  And finally, once I rolled onto my stomach, I started to feel a little distress as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm beds as they help keep the spine in a nice, even line, so those who sleep solely in their stomachs might want to decide on a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissPlushbeds Memory Foam Reviews

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a partner? Well then, you’ll want to keep a tight eye trained on its own motion transfer, or the quantity of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the bed to another.

Essentially, this test will let you know just how bothered you’ll be by your bed partner’s moves in the night.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

FYI: Each fall is intended to symbolize another movement you’re likely to encounter in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

For those who aren’t fans of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most common complaints related to the substance and can be viewed in additional all-latex beds, like the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To exemplify this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 pound steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the bounce of the latex helps to combat any sort of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an extraordinary amount of sinkage.

While not exactly the same as contouring, which refers to the sort of cushiony pressure relief you might get at the shoulders and buttocks from a memory foam mattress like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft feel.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS BEST FOR YOU?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its biggest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favourite things about this mattress is how bouncy it is, which could be an attractive feature for those looking for buoyant support.

Another major pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The organic latex is excellent at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t overheat at night.

And finally, a big selling point is the organic building . From the organic wool in the cover to the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is totally green.

CONS

As we discussed previously, this mattress didn’t have amazing movement transfer results, meaning you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the night.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you’re not going to encounter a good deal of contour here, one of the most common complaints about latex that might be a deal breaker for those of you needing deep pressure relief. Plushbeds Memory Foam Reviews

SUMMARY

plushbeds-mattress-summary

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress is a good mattress overall. With very good comfort, support, bounce, and cooling, it’s tough to look beyond this 100% latex mattress. A natural cotton cover improves airflow and rounds out a healthy outer covering. Additionally, there is a 1″ layer of 100 percent Joma wool underneath the cover that does an excellent job of enhancing breathablity of the mattress as well as absorbing moisture. This helps sleepers keep a cool body temperature during sleep. Overall, the PlushBeds mattress is a wonderful latex mattress that gives an high quality level of support in all sleeping positions together with great cooling and a rounded hug / body shape.
