DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Savant

I’m super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at one of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it most.
Read on below for my full review of the DreamCloud mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Savant

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs provide the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for steady air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a sound foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion also. This gives you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it is definitely a good bed. As you’ll feel some small sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you out of the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Savant

PRESSURE MAP

Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I felt encouraged and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Savant

THE MATTRESS WITH A 365 NIGHT TRIAL & FOREVER WARRANTY

If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

When buying a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Savant

EDGE SUPPORT

If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I am especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
