DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle

I am super excited about the current review since I’ll be having a look at a few of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a nice lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view also.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent the this mattress is pretty firm.

Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from the bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle

Instead of just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover supplied quality relief in my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt encouraged and the very best foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle

MOTION TRANSFER

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you will want to learn what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to another.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still look at the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

When buying a new mattress, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Vs Tuft And Needle

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you are lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
