DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Owner

I’m super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at one of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it .

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of the three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of this DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Owner

Instead of simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt encouraged and the very best foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Owner

MOTION TRANSFER

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you will want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress into the other.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, thanks to its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

If buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re going to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit on the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers particularly. Dreamcloud Mattress Owner

EDGE SUPPORT

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and wish to use the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
