DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Sleep Mattress

I am super excited about the current review since I’ll be having a look at one of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper could benefit from it most.

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil parts, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.

Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and provide some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.

These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important use of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a solid foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After having a look at the building of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a nice lift from the springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. Rather than giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is clear that this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the rest of the testers that it is definitely a good bed. As you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Sleep Mattress

Instead of just describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

Back:  Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the graph above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Sleep Mattress

MOTION TRANSFER

If you intend on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress into the other.

To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly bigger spikes, I’d still look at the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, making this a great alternative for couples.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

While you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit on the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Sleep Mattress

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.

Changing to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
