If you are trying to snag an eco-friendly mattress for your bedroom, you may want to take into account the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Built with organic latex, this bed aims to be as great for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Is Plush Beds A Good Mattress

But just how well does it live up to this assignment? That’s what I am here to find out, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to figure out its feel, how it sleeps and whether or not it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Continue reading below for my full review of the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is built with three 3″ layers of organic Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which often has a light and airy texture, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, all the three Dunlop sections is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best matches the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six distinct firmnesses for each mattress, with a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t be able to determine how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a set of graphics on its website detailing all the various ways to orient the latex sections.

Additionally, if you’re still not happy with the feel, PlushBeds is pleased to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex for more support.

For the purpose of my review, I will be looking at the Botanical Bliss at the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Medium layer in the center and the Firm segment as the base.

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this lavish latex mattress and see what is going on inside.

Cover:  Made with organic cotton and wool, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with some satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the following three sections are comprised of 100% all-natural Dunlop Latex.

This material is compact and has a fast response to pressure, creating a bed that’s incredibly bouncy. In comparison to memory foam, latex does not feature much if any contouring, so you are not likely to feel stuck at the mattress.

Another thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be an excellent option for those who are inclined to sleep hot at night.

As far as the texture in this specific configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some initial deep sinkage to the bed, which is buffered slightly by the Medium latex section as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base below.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ structure is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all its materials are accredited by the Global Organic Latex Standard and the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Additionally, the mattress is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making sure that the mattress has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Is Plush Beds A Good Mattress

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the construction of the Botanical Bliss, let us talk about the firmness and feel.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and found that I was immediately interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in further, I struck the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and out of the structure.

Since folks of different sizes, shapes and weights are going to feel firmness otherwise, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We all took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a personal firmness score and then compiled them on the graph below.

While feel is always going to be an individual thing, this will hopefully give you a great sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from one outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing on an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it appears like this bed is really soft.

Personally, I gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for a few pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Keep in mind that we are only taking a look at the bed in its”Moderate” orientation and that changing around the layers can make it firmer or softer.

To get more specific, the Botanical Bliss Medium provides a firmness range from 5-7 using gentle, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and just utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These different sections can be moved around to create 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed range.

So if we swapped across the layers in our bed to have a firm coating up top, a medium transition section and a soft foundation, we’d wind up with a bed which had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions about how to orient the layers in your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important component of texture is pressure, or more especially where pressure points might kind while lying on top of a brand new bed.

Instead of merely describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d provide you a visual representation instead. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach.

You can see the effects on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the soft coating of latex foam working to fill in the space at my lumbar region.

Even for all this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it easy for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I detected some profound compression through the top layers.

While I did not feel as though I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had especially solid edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers tend to enjoy softer mattresses, I was not surprised to find that I felt a lot of great pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the picture above, I didn’t notice any strain in my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for those who doze mostly on their sides.

Stomach:  And finally, after I rolled onto my stomach, I started to feel a little distress as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer firm beds as they help to keep the spine in a nice, even line, so those who sleep solely in their stomachs might want to decide on a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissIs Plush Beds A Good Mattress

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a spouse ? Well then, you will want to keep a tight eye trained on its motion move, or the amount of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the bed to another.

Basically, this test will inform you just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s moves in the night.

To illustrate this, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

FYI: Each drop is intended to symbolize a different movement you are likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to complete on jumping (12″).

For those people who aren’t fans of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most common complaints related to the material and can be seen in additional all-latex beds, like the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

If purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”to” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To exemplify this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 pound medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the bounce of the latex certainly helps to combat any type of stuck-in-the-bed feeling, the mattress itself features an extraordinary amount of sinkage.

While not exactly the same as contouring, which refers to the sort of cushiony pressure relief you may get at the shoulders and hips from a memory foam mattress like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft feel.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Now that we have taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its greatest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favorite things about this mattress is the way bouncy it is, which might be an attractive feature for those looking for buoyant support.

Another significant pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The all-natural latex is fantastic at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t overheat at night.

And finally, a big selling point is the organic construction. From the natural wool in the cover into the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is totally green.

CONS

As we mentioned above, this mattress did not have amazing motion transfer results, which means that you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the evening.

Another factor to keep in mind is that you’re not going to experience a good deal of shape here, one of the most frequent complaints about latex that could be a deal breaker for those of you needing deep pressure relief. Is Plush Beds A Good Mattress
