DreamCloud Mattress Review Dreamcloud Mattress Adjustable Frame Bed

I’m super excited about the current review because I’ll be taking a look at a few of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it most.

CONSTRUCTION

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I am stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact together.

Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.

Foam Layers:  beneath the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. When these sections are soft to the touch and provide some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these small ventilations encourages even more cooling.

Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is composed of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the spaces between them allow for continuous air flow.

Foundation Layer:  A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the whole.

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of the quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from springs.

At this point I’d like to remember that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion as well.

DreamCloud-Firmness-Test

As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s clear the this mattress is really firm.

I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a solid bed. While you’ll feel some small sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you out of the bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Dreamcloud Mattress Adjustable Frame Bed

PRESSURE MAP

Rather than just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points shape while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy.

Back:  Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed whatsoever. The quilted cover provided quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.

Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt encouraged and the top foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this place.

Stomach:  Shifting over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I should mention that I managed to transition across these positions with relative ease. Dreamcloud Mattress Adjustable Frame Bed

MOTION TRANSFER

If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that’s detectable from one side of the mattress into the other.

To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Dreamcloud-Motion-Transfer-test

The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating movement, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.

When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”to” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

  • 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
  • 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
  • 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.

As you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Dreamcloud Mattress Adjustable Frame Bed

If you’re going to share your bed with a partner and wish to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.

I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.

Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did at the middle . Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.

Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, together with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.

In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
