If you’re looking to snag an eco-friendly mattress for your bedroom, you may want to take into account the Botanical Bliss mattress from PlushBeds. Built with organic latex, this mattress aims to be as good for your sleep hygiene as it is for the environment. Plush Beds Organic Latex

But just how well does it live up to this mission? That’s what I’m here to learn, by putting it through a series of rigorous tests to figure out its feel, the way that it sleeps and whether or not it may be the mattress of your dreams.

Continue reading below for my full review of the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress.

CONSTRUCTION

The Botanical Bliss is constructed with three 3″ layers of natural Dunlop Latex.

Unlike Talalay Latex, which frequently has a light and airy feel, Dunlop is dense and makes for a firmer structure.

Here, all the three Dunlop segments is categorized as either Soft, Medium or Firm, and can be arranged in whatever order best suits the sleeper.

According to PlushBeds, there are a total of six distinct firmnesses for each mattress, using a split firmness option available for King and Cal King sizes.

Worried you won’t have the ability to figure out how to configure the layers to your liking? No sweat! The brand offers a set of graphics on its site detailing all the various ways to orient the latex sections.

Additionally, if you are still not satisfied with the feel, PlushBeds is pleased to throw in an extra Firm layer of latex to get more support.

For the purpose of my review, I will be looking at the Botanical Bliss in the”Soft” orientation, which has the Soft layer on top, the Moderate layer in the middle and the Firm section as the foundation .

But enough talk! Let’s dive into this lavish latex mattress and see what’s going on inside.

Cover:  Made with organic cotton and wool, the cover is soft and provides the sleeper with a few satisfying comfort.

Latex Layers:  As I mentioned up top, the next three sections are comprised of 100% organic Dunlop Latex.

This substance is compact and has a quick response to pressure, creating a bed that is incredibly bouncy. Compared to memory foam, latex does not feature much if any contouring, so you’re not likely to feel stuck at the mattress.

Another thing you’re likely to notice with latex is that it sleeps cool, so could be an excellent option for those who tend to sleep hot at night.

So far as the texture in this specific configuration is concerned, placing the Soft layer up top allows for some first deep sinkage to the bed, which is buffered slightly by the Medium latex segment as the sleeper transitions into the Firm base under.

Certified Organic

The Botanical Bliss‘ construction is also noteworthy because it’s a 100% certified organic mattress, which means all its materials are licensed by the Global Organic Latex Standard and the International Organic Textile Standard.

Plus, the bed is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified, making sure that the mattress has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air. Plush Beds Organic Latex

FIRMNESS

After taking a look at the building of the Botanical Bliss, let’s chat about the firmness and texture.

I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and discovered that I was immediately interacting with the soft wool cover.

Pressing in farther, I struck the buoyant lift of the latex layers, which propelled me up and from the structure.

Since folks of different sizes, shapes and weights will feel firmness otherwise, I decided to bring in three other testers to help me figure out just how firm the Botanical Bliss is.

We each took a turn lying on the plush organic mattress, gave it a private firmness rating and then compiled them on the chart below.

While feel is always going to be a single thing, this will hopefully give you a great sense of the firmness range you can expect from this bed.

Aside from 1 outlier, we were mostly in agreement about the firmness of the Botanical Bliss, landing an average rating of 5.4.

When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness, it appears as though this bed is really soft.

I personally gave the mattress a 5. While the bounce of the latex is very likely to keep you positioned on top of the bed, the material is surprisingly gentle, allowing for a few pretty deep sinkage through the mattress.

Bear in mind that we’re only looking at the bed in its”Moderate” orientation and that shifting around the layers can make it either firmer or softer.

To get more specific, the Botanical Bliss Moderate provides a firmness range from 5-7 using gentle, medium and firm layers of latex.

The Botanical Bliss Firm runs from 7-9 and just utilizes medium, firm and extra firm latex. These various sections can be moved around to make 6 unique configurations, representing a subtle gradient within the prescribed selection.

So if we swapped around the layers in our bed to have a firm layer up top, a moderate transition section and a soft foundation, we’d wind up with a bed which had a firmness of about 7.

As I mentioned up top, instructions about how best to orient the layers in your respective Botanical Bliss are available on the brand’s website.

PRESSURE MAP

Another important part of feel is pressure, or more specifically where pressure points might form while lying on top of a brand new bed.

Rather than merely describing where these tension spots might crop up, I thought I’d provide you a visual representation instead. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.

You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).

Back: Lying on my back, I could really feel myself sinking into the mattress, with the soft layer of latex foam working to fill in the space at my lumbar region.

Even for this sinkage, the responsiveness of the latex made it easy for me to roll around and change positions.

Edge Support: Scooting as close to the side as I could, I noticed some deep compression through the top layers.

While I did not feel as if I’d roll out of bed, I would not say this mattress had especially good edge support.

Side: Since side sleepers have a tendency to like softer mattresses, I was not surprised to find that I felt a lot of fantastic pressure relief in this position.

As you can see in the graphic above, I did not notice any tension at my shoulders or hips, typical problem areas for those who doze mostly on their sides.

Stomach:  And lastly, once I rolled onto my stomach, I started to feel a little discomfort as the soft nature of the bed caused my hips to sink out of alignment with my shoulders.

Stomach sleepers have a tendency to prefer firm beds as they help to keep the spine in a pleasant, even line, so those who sleep solely in their stomachs might want to decide on a firmer configuration of the Botanical BlissPlush Beds Organic Latex

MOTION TRANSFER

Plan on sharing your bed with a spouse ? Well then, you will want to keep a tight eye trained on its own motion transfer, or the quantity of disturbance likely to be felt from one side of the bed to another.

Essentially, this test will let you know just how bothered you’ll be by your bed partner’s movements in the evening.

To exemplify this, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.

FYI: Each drop is meant to symbolize a different movement you’re likely to experience in bed, from tossing and turning (4″) to getting out of bed (8″) all the way to full on jumping (12″).

For those people who aren’t lovers of latex, this interfering bounce is one of the most common complaints related to the material and can be viewed in additional all-latex beds, like the Zenhaven.

SINKAGE TEST

When purchasing a new bed, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or lying”on top” of it.

To illustrate this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and quantified how much they compressed the surface.

The variations in size, weight and density are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.

6 lb medicine ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
10 lb steel ball: 2.5 inches of sinkage.
50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
100 lb medicine ball: 6.5 inches of sinkage.

These results are really interesting because while the bounce of the latex helps to combat any sort of stuck-in-the-bed atmosphere, the mattress itself features an extraordinary amount of sinkage.

While not exactly the same as contouring, which refers to this sort of cushiony pressure relief you might get in the shoulders and buttocks from a memory foam bed like the Tempurpedic, the sinkage nonetheless contributes to the Botanical Bliss’ overall soft feel.

IS THE PLUSH BEDS MATTRESS BEST FOR YOU?

Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the Botanical Bliss mattress, I want to highlight some of its greatest pros and cons:

PROS

One of my favorite things about this mattress is how bouncy it is, which could be an attractive feature for those looking for buoyant support.

Another significant pro is that the Botanical Bliss sleeps cool. The organic latex is excellent at temperature regulation, ensuring that you won’t overheat at night.

And lastly, a huge selling point is the organic construction. From the organic wool in the cover into the Dunlop Latex layers, this bad boy is totally green.

CONS

As we discussed above, this mattress didn’t have amazing movement transfer results, meaning you’re likely to be disturbed by movements in the evening.

Another factor to keep in mind is that you’re not going to experience a lot of shape here, one of the most frequent complaints about latex that could be a deal breaker for those of you in need of deep pressure relief. Plush Beds Organic Latex
